چکیده
Large-scale Modeling and Optimization of En Route Air Traffic Flow by Dengfeng Sun Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering-Civil and Environmental Engineering University of California at Berkeley Professor Alexandre M. Bayen, Chair The research presented in this dissertation is motivated by the need for balancing the increasing demand and limited capacity of the National Airspace System (NAS), and more generally for large scale networked dynamical systems. A new paradigm for building an Eulerian-Lagrangian Cell Transmission Model for air traffic flow is developed. It is based on a network flow model constructed from historical air traffic data, and is applied to the entire continental NAS in the United States. This model is called Large-capacity Cell Transmission Model, CTM(L), in reference to the Cell Transmission Model in highway traffic. The CTM(L) captures fundamental characteristics, for example aircraft counts in sectors and travel times, of traffic flows in the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system. The predictive capabilities of the model are successfully validated against the recorded Enhanced Traffic Management System (ETMS) and Aircraft Situation Display to Industry (ASDI) data by showing an accurate match between predicted sector counts (based on filed flight plans) and measured sector counts.

An Integer Optimization Approach to Large-Scale Air Traffic Flow Management
This paper presents a new integer programming (IP) model for large-scale instances of the air traffic flow management (ATFM) problem. The model covers all the phases of each flight—i.e., takeoff, en route cruising, and landing—and solves for an optimal combination of flow management actions, including ground-holding, rerouting, speed control, and airborne holding on a flight-by-flight basis. A ...

Current European Air Traffic Control (ATC) system is far exceeded by the demand and the resulting delays are a financial and psychological burden for airlines and passengers. One of their main sources is the hourly capacity constraints, defined on each en-route ATC sector, but poorly representing the workload of controllers. Whereas previous works were mainly focused on optimizing the ground de...
متن کاملA Flow-based Flight Scheduler for En-route Air Traffic Management
This paper addresses a network-wide scheduling problem for generating, adjusting and optimizing flight schedules in en-route airspace. The aim of scheduling is twofold: to support flight plans by providing flight schedules reliable on optimal flow restrictions; and to assist en-route traffic control by ensuring safe and ordered trajectory of traffic. Firstly, we design an algorithm to generate ...
متن کاملDynamic Stochastic Optimization Model for Air Traffic Flow Management with En Route and Airport Capacity Constraints
In this paper, we present a linear dynamic stochastic optimization model for Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) that accounts for uncertainty in both airport and en route airspace capacity. Rather than analyzing this problem in its full generality, we focus on the case in which there is a single destination airport and a small number of arrival fixes subject to blockage or reduced capacity as a...

Coordinating nationwide air traffic flow is a large-scale problem. Themodeling process generally involves analysis of massive flight data, and its optimization involves computationally expensive algorithms. This paper uses Hadoop MapReduce, a big data processing model, to facilitate air traffic flow modeling and optimization, where computationally intensive tasks are automatically spread to Had...
